  1. Two spreads (title page, using a public domain image modified in Photoshop, and first spread of the text) from a recently published satirical novel that pokes fun at consumer society, religion, corporate culture and more. (I didn’t design the cover, so it’s not included here.)

I used public domain woodcuts from the 15th-17th centuries, sometimes modified in Photoshop, to evoke the religious themes and keep the design from getting into the text block rut. I love the strength of lines and the pure black and white of old woodcuts, and they’re fun to manipulate.

(I made the text nonsensical to avoid offending anyone, but I couldn’t take the illustrations out. If they offend you, I apologize.)

  2. Pages from Power and Patronage in Medieval Syria. The trim size is 8.5 x 11, so there was a danger of making the lines too long or too tightly leaded. About a third of the book’s pages have illustrations on them, which presents a number of challenges not faced in a book without illustrations. Included 5 pages of color plates. In addition to page design and layout, dust jacket and some editing, I redrew some maps, scanned many illustrations, indexed the entire book. 255 pages.

  3. Two spreads (made to look more or less realistically 3D in Photoshop—this is not a mediocre photo of actual pages) from Sidi Bou Sa’id. This book is 200 pages long, and has more than 200 illustrations and photos. That took some time! The book is available on Amazon.

The bowfin (amia calva) is a pure predator. When dinosaurs were stomping around, the bowfin lurked in the weeds. It’s remained pretty much unchanged since. I have yet to catch one, but when I do you can bet I’ll be keeping my fingers away from the teeth. I made this poster for fun after playing around with wordle and the text from some web articles about the bowfin. I went a little crazy with Photoshop, creating the clouds of blood in the water and the reflective water surface as seen from below. It was going to be simple, but it was so much fun that I couldn’t stop. In case there is interest from roughfishers out there, prints are for sale. Tell your friends.
